A MOMENT TO READ

On the day you buy it, everything seems simple: take the little tree home and look after it carefully. Weeks later, the questions begin. Is there enough light here? Does it need water today? What happens when I travel? For some people, these questions are the pleasure of gardening. For others, they become a source of worry.

Would you rather grow it or enjoy the view?

A keen gardener enjoys more than the look of a tree. New growth and time spent tending it are part of the attraction. You may simply want a natural landscape at home without a watering or pruning schedule. Natural preserved plants do not grow or require the daily attention of a growing tree. The important difference is the experience you want from having it.

When travel gets in the way

Frequent travel and irregular working hours make a plant’s care needs more important. A traditional bonsai’s requirements depend on its species, the season and its surroundings; one routine will not suit every tree. With preserved bonsai, you do not need to arrange watering while you are away. It still needs a suitable location, away from direct sunlight, excessive humidity and direct heat.

NATURE / ART / LIFE

The right tree is one you enjoy looking at, and enjoy living with.

What if your favourite spot is not by a window?

A bookshelf or executive desk might be a beautiful place for a little tree, but not a suitable growing environment for a particular species. Traditional bonsai needs placement that matches its light requirements. Preserved bonsai does not depend on light for growth, offering more flexibility in a room. Damp spaces and spots beside heaters or air-conditioning outlets are still unsuitable.

If you have worried about a bonsai drying out

Preserved bonsai does not need watering and should not be watered. However, unsuitable conditions can still damage the appearance and texture of its botanicals. Preservation is also different from a tree accidentally drying out: a bonsai lost through a care problem does not become a preserved bonsai. Reduced upkeep should never be mistaken for immunity to damage.

THE QUIET TAKEAWAY

For yourself, or as a gift?

If you enjoy cultivating plants and have the right conditions, tending a bonsai can be rewarding. If you want nature in your space without daily plant care, preserved bonsai may be a closer fit. Ask the same question when choosing a gift: does the recipient enjoy gardening, or would they rather enjoy the view? A thoughtful gift fits the life of the person receiving it.
